Atlanta United Hold Off Sporting Kansas City 2-1 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium
Second-half goal by Simon Afrifa gave visitors hope, but Atlanta held on for the win.
Atlanta United secured a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City in a tightly contested MLS clash at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, with goals from T. Jacob and F. Picault proving enough to hold off a late rally from the visitors.
The hosts got off to a strong start, taking the lead in the 13th minute through T. Jacob, who finished coolly after a well-weighted through ball from M. Almiron. Just before the half-hour mark, Atlanta doubled their advantage as F. Picault slotted home from inside the box, capitalizing on a precise cross from E. Baez.
Sporting Kansas City went into the break trailing 2-0 but showed renewed urgency after the restart. Their efforts paid off in the 70th minute when S. Afrifa pulled one back for the visitors, firing low into the bottom corner to reduce the deficit and set up a tense finish.
The atmosphere at Mercedes-Benz Stadium grew more intense as Kansas City pushed forward in search of an equalizer. However, Atlanta’s defense, marshalled by their backline, managed to withstand the pressure and preserve the lead.
Discipline issues surfaced late in the game, with Atlanta’s L. Brennan picking up a yellow card in the 72nd minute, followed by E. Baez in the 76th. Both players were cautioned as the hosts looked to protect their advantage in the closing stages.
Despite the late surge from Sporting Kansas City, Atlanta United maintained control and earned all three points. The win was a welcome boost for Gerardo Martino’s side as they look to build momentum in the regular season.
Sporting Kansas City’s Raphael Wicky will be left to rue missed opportunities, particularly in the first half when his side failed to test Atlanta’s goalkeeper. Still, the performance showed improvement in the second period that could serve them well moving forward.
Referee Tori Penso kept a firm handle on proceedings throughout, managing a physical contest that intensified as the clock wound down. The result leaves Atlanta in a stronger position in the Eastern Conference table.
