Atletico Madrid storm to 3-1 Seville victory over Sevilla
Atletico Madrid secured a commanding 3-1 win away at Sevilla with goals from Baena and Lookman, moving level on points in La Liga.
Atletico Madrid delivered a statement performance in Seville, overcoming a late consolation from Sevilla to secure a 3-1 victory at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. The result leaves both sides with contrasting momentum heading into the early stages of the La Liga campaign.
The visitors made the perfect start when A. Baena opened the scoring in the 4th minute, capitalising on a precise assist from Lee Kang-In. Playing in a 4-4-2 under Diego Simeone, Atletico settled quickly and exposed the space behind Sevilla’s 4-2-3-1 setup.
Baena doubled the lead in the 33rd minute, this time finding the net from a M. Llorente pass. The hosts, coached by Luis Garcia Plaza, struggled to contain Atletico’s pressing and direct play throughout the first half.
A. Lookman added a third before the break, slotting home in the 26th minute after a clever ball from P. Barrios. Atletico went into the tunnel with a commanding 3-0 advantage, with Sevilla having little to show for their efforts.
Despite dominating possession, Sevilla found themselves frustrated by Atletico’s resolute shape. Their lack of cutting edge in the final third was evident, and they were punished for every loose ball in dangerous areas.
The second half offered little reprieve for the home side. Sevilla’s midfield struggled to impose rhythm, and their attacks often broke down against a compact and organised Atletico block.
M. Sierra pulled one back for Sevilla in the 66th minute, converting a well-weighted pass from R. Ure. It was a moment of individual quality that gave the home crowd hope, but Atletico’s lead remained intact.
Sevilla threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, creating several half-chances. However, Atletico’s defence, marshalled effectively, held firm under pressure.
The closing stages saw tension build, with M. Llorente collecting a booking in first-half stoppage time for Atletico. Sevilla’s I. Romero and G. Suazo also received yellow cards as the hosts pushed for a dramatic finish.
Atletico’s M. Pubill was the final player to be cautioned, as referee Javier Alberola Rojas attempted to maintain control in a physical finale. The visitors managed to see out the result with composure.
The victory lifts Atletico Madrid to sixth in La Liga with four points from two matches, while Sevilla sit fourth with six points from two games. Both sides will reflect on contrasting outcomes from this tightly contested encounter.
