Botafogo Edge Cienciano in Rio to Reach Sudamericana Last 16
Danilo Pereira's early strike proved enough as Botafogo held on for a 1-0 victory at Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos.

Botafogo moved through the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Round of 16 with a narrow but deserved 1-0 win over Cienciano at Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro.
The hosts made the perfect start when Danilo Pereira drilled home in the eighth minute, capitalising on a clever ball forward from A. Montoro to break the deadlock inside the opening quarter of an hour.
Cienciano tried to respond but struggled to unlock a compact Botafogo defence, with their best chance falling to M. Amondarain just before half-time, though the forward could not test the goalkeeper.

The visitors grew more adventurous in the second half and thought they had equalised when a header bounced down off the crossbar, but the effort was ruled out for offside following a lengthy consultation.
Botafogo goalkeeper was largely untroubled but pulled off one smart low save in the 67th minute to deny C. Cabello after a well-worked move down the left flank.
Both sides pushed for a decisive goal in the closing stages, but it was Botafogo who came closest, with substitute N. Ferraresi forcing a fine stop from the Cienciano keeper in stoppage time.
The result leaves Botafogo top of Group E on 16 points after six matches, while Cienciano finish second in Group B with eight points from their campaign.
Referee J. Benitez kept a tight grip on proceedings, dishing out nine yellow cards across the match as both teams were forced to settle a fiery contest in midfield.
Botafogo will now await the draw for the next round, with their solid defensive showing and clinical finishing likely to serve them well in the knockout phase.
Cienciano, meanwhile, will reflect on a spirited effort but ultimately lacked the cutting edge needed to breake the deadlock against a determined home side.
