Santa Clara Edge Famalicao in Rain-Soaked Ponta Delgada Finale
G. Paciencia's 22nd-minute strike secured a 1-0 victory for Santa Clara at Estadio de São Miguel in their Primeira Liga clash.
Santa Clara moved to within the top three of the Primeira Liga after holding off a late Famalicao push to claim a 1-0 victory at Estadio de São Miguel on Sunday evening.
The hosts started brightly and broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when G. Paciencia slotted home from close range, with Sorriso providing the assist. The goal gave Santa Clara the edge they needed heading into the break, with the scoreline reading 1-0 in their favour at halftime.
Despite several attempts from Famalicao in the second half, Santa Clara’s defence remained resolute. The visitors grew more urgent as the clock ticked on, and their pressure told as they earned a flurry of chances in the final twenty minutes.
The intensity ramped up after the hour mark, with Famalicao’s Léo Realpe and Mathias De Amorim both receiving yellow cards as they pushed forward in search of an equaliser. A further booking for Mathis Jangeal late on did little to change the outcome.
Santa Clara, meanwhile, were forced to see Vinícius Lopes collect a caution in the 26th minute, but the hosts otherwise stuck to their task with discipline.
The result leaves Santa Clara in third place in the Primeira Liga table after three matches, with seven points to show for their efforts. Famalicao, on the other hand, remain mired in 14th position with just one point from their opening fixtures.
Both sides deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation under their respective managers, with Carlos Carvalhal guiding Famalicao and Petit overseeing Santa Clara. The match was officiated by referee Vasilica Iancu.
For Santa Clara, the win provides momentum as they look to build on their strong start to the campaign. Famalicao will need to regroup quickly if they hope to climb out of the relegation zone in the weeks ahead.
The defeat marks another missed opportunity for Famalicao, who showed promise in patches but ultimately lacked the cutting edge in the final third. Their inability to convert possession into goals will be a concern heading into their next fixture.
