Sevilla overcome early red card to beat Athletic Club 3-1 at San Mamés

Sevilla secured a 3-1 victory at San Mamés despite finishing the match with fewer players on the pitch.

Athletic Club - Sevilla

Sevilla overcame a difficult start to claim a 3-1 win over Athletic Club at San Mamés, with the visitors capitalizing on a red card shown to Athletic Club's Yuri Berchiche in the 11th minute. The home side found themselves on the back foot early, as Berchiche's dismissal left them with ten men for most of the match.

Oso gave Sevilla the lead in the 15th minute, striking a Normal Goal that put the visitors ahead despite the numerical disadvantage. The goal energized Sevilla, who continued to press forward even with fewer players on the pitch.

The second half saw Sevilla extend their advantage when C. Ejuke scored in the 50th minute, with I. Romero providing the assist. The goal showcased Sevilla's ability to exploit spaces left by Athletic Club's reshuffled defense.

In the 57th minute, I. Romero added another goal for Sevilla, with Oso delivering the assist. The goal further solidified Sevilla's position and made it difficult for Athletic Club to mount a comeback.

Athletic Club managed to pull one back in the 70th minute through A. Paredes, with Y. Alvarez providing the assist. The goal offered a glimmer of hope for the home side, but it was not enough to change the outcome.

The match saw several yellow cards, including bookings for Peque and M. Sierra of Sevilla in the 22nd and 25th minutes, respectively, and G. Guruzeta of Athletic Club also in the 25th minute. J. Guridi of Sevilla received a yellow card in the 39th minute, while I. Ruiz de Galarreta of Athletic Club was booked in the 87th minute.

Late in the game, I. Romero and N. Guilen of Sevilla were shown yellow cards in the 90th and 90+3rd minutes, respectively. Despite the late bookings, Sevilla maintained their lead and secured all three points.

The victory moves Sevilla to fourth place in La Liga with three points after one match, while Athletic Club remains without a point after zero matches played. The home side will need to regroup quickly as they look to recover from this defeat.

Referee César Soto Grado oversaw the match, which kicked off at 15:00 UTC at San Mamés. Both coaches, Luis Garcia Plaza for Sevilla and Edin Terzic for Athletic Club, opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, but it was Sevilla who executed their game plan more effectively on the day.
