Sparta Rotterdam held to dramatic 3-3 draw by Utrecht after late surge
Two late goals from Utrecht sealed a 3-3 draw at Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel in Eredivisie round three.

Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht played out a thrilling 3-3 draw in a match that delivered goals in both halves and a dramatic finish at Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel.
Utrecht took the lead in the 16th minute through M. Didden, who was set up by Y. Cathline. Sparta responded before halftime as M. Young scored in the 45th minute, assisted by B. Kuipers, leveling the tie at 1-1.
The second half began with immediate impact. Just after the break, in the 46th minute, A. Stepanov restored Utrecht’s lead with an assist from N. Vesterlund. Sparta equalized again in the 67th minute when M. Zonneveld found the net, this time assisted by S. Mito.

Utrecht regained the lead in the 76th minute through A. Blake, whose goal came without an assist. With just minutes remaining, Sparta pushed forward and were rewarded in stoppage time as N. Verschuren scored in the 90+6th minute, assisted by J. Ideho, securing a 3-3 draw.
Both teams started the match in the bottom half of the Eredivisie table, and the result left them separated by just one point. Sparta Rotterdam sits in 12th place with three points from two games, while Utrecht remains in 14th with none.
Referee Dennis Higler managed a match that saw six goals and no bookings. Both sides lined up in a 3-4-3 formation under managers Rogier Meijer and Anthony Correia respectively.
The result keeps both clubs searching for consistency early in the season. With only two games played, there is little margin for error in the Eredivisie, and both teams will aim to build on this point in their upcoming fixtures.
Play continued until the final moments, with Sparta’s late equalizer ensuring they left the stadium with a point. The atmosphere at Het Kasteel was electric as the home crowd celebrated their team’s resilience in the dying seconds.
For Utrecht, the draw offers little consolation in terms of league position, but the performance showed promise. Sparta, meanwhile, will take heart from their ability to come back twice and salvage a draw at home.
The Eredivisie continues next week with both teams expected to be active in the transfer market as they look to strengthen their squads.
