Sporting CP crush Rio Ave 4-0 with Suarez brace in Vila do Conde

Sporting CP secured a commanding 4-0 victory over Rio Ave in their Primeira Liga clash at Estádio do Rio Ave FC, with Luis Suarez leading the charge with a brace. The result leaves Rio Ave rooted to the bottom of the table after three matches, while Sporting CP continue their strong start to the season. The hosts, coached by Sotiris Sylaidopoulos in a 4-2-3-1 formation, were undone early as Sporting struck twice within the opening 20 minutes. Francisco Goncalves opened the scoring in the fifth minute, slotting home a pass from Ibrahim Doumbia, before Gelson Martins turned provider for Goncalves to set up a composed finish from Guélor Kanga Catamo on the 19th minute. Suarez then added his first just before the half-hour mark, capitalizing on a loose ball to fire low into the bottom corner. The Uruguayan forward doubled his tally seven minutes later, this time finding the net via a perfectly weighted through-ball from Miguel Araujo, sending the visitors into halftime with a 4-0 cushion. Suarez’s second yellow card of the match came in the 51st minute when he was shown a caution for a late challenge on T. Nikitscher, who himself received a booking ten minutes later for dissent. Despite the sending-off risk, Sporting maintained control and limited Rio Ave to few clear opportunities, with the home side struggling to break down a compact and organized defense. The second half offered little in the way of drama, as both teams settled into a rhythm that favored the visitors, who had little need to push further forward. Referee Bruno Jose Ribeiro Pires Costa kept a firm hand on proceedings, with few controversial decisions to report. For Rio Ave, the defeat marks another disappointing outing in front of their home supporters, with Sylaidopoulos unable to find an answer to Sporting’s fluid attacking movement. The loss sees them drop to 10th in the Primeira Liga table with just three points from three games, while Sporting CP climb to second place with seven points. Their next fixtures will be crucial for both sides as they look to build momentum in the early stages of the campaign. Sporting’s performance will give Rui Borges plenty to be pleased with, particularly the sharpness of their front line and the resilience shown even after going down to ten men late in the first half.
