Brighton secured a commanding 4-0 win over Aston Villa at the American Express Stadium, with Joao Gomes sent off just before halftime.

Brighton opened their Premier League campaign with a convincing 4-0 victory over Aston Villa at the American Express Stadium, with referee Peter Bankes overseeing a match that quickly shifted in the home side's favour.

The visitors endured a nightmare start as early as the 8th minute when Lisandro Martínez's long ball found Victor Lindelöf, who could only divert the ball past his own goalkeeper and into the net. The own goal gave Brighton an unexpected lead and set the tone for the opening exchanges.

Brighton doubled their advantage in the 18th minute when Matt De Cuyper fired home, with Georginio Rutter claiming the assist. The home side were clearly energised by their early lead and continued to press forward with purpose.

Just twelve minutes later, Joël Hinshelwood added a third, slotting home after a perfectly weighted pass from Dominic Gómez. Aston Villa's hopes of a comeback were further diminished when Hinshelwood scored again in the 31st minute, this time finding the net without any assist, completing his brace before the break.

Aston Villa's frustrations boiled over in first-half stoppage time. Joao Gomes, who had already been booked in the 9th minute for a foul, received a second yellow card in the 40th minute for another reckless challenge, leaving his side to trudge off at the interval trailing 4-0.

Despite being a man down for the entire second half, Aston Villa managed to keep a clean sheet, with their defence showing resilience in the face of Brighton's continued attacking pressure. However, they struggled to create meaningful chances of their own.

Brighton, meanwhile, maintained their intensity throughout the final thirty minutes, controlling possession and testing the opposition goalkeeper with a series of long-range efforts. Their dominance was only punctuated by a late yellow card for Matt Cash in the 95th minute, a minor consolation for the visitors on a difficult afternoon.

The result left Brighton in 14th place in the table, while Aston Villa dropped to 7th, both sides having played just one match in the new campaign.
