Ipswich 2-1 Sunderland: Late Clarke strike seals opening-day win
J. Clarke's 90th-minute winner gave Ipswich a dramatic start to their Premier League campaign at Portman Road.

Ipswich earned a dramatic opening-day victory in the Premier League thanks to a stoppage-time goal from J. Clarke, securing a 2-1 win over Sunderland at Portman Road Stadium.
The home side got off to a strong start when Emersonn opened the scoring in the 24th minute, finishing coolly after a well-weighted pass from J. Enciso. The assist showcased Ipswich's fluid attacking play under Gary O'Neil, who deployed a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Sunderland responded before the break, with N. Angulo pulling one back for the visitors in the 39th minute. The goal levelled proceedings and set up an intriguing second half, with both teams locked at 1-1 heading into the break.
The hosts continued to push for a winner, but Sunderland's defensive shape held firm for much of the match. Referee Farai Hallam kept a close eye on the action, with three yellow cards issued to Sunderland players — D. Ballard in the 36th minute, followed by N. Angulo and L. O'Nien in the latter stages.
Despite the pressure, it was Ipswich who found the net again in the 90th minute. Substitute J. Clarke received a perfectly timed pass from S. Lukic and slotted home to spark wild celebrations at Portman Road.
The result leaves Ipswich in 14th place in the early table, while Sunderland sits in 10th. Both teams will take positives from an entertaining season opener that delivered late drama.
Gary O'Neil's tactical approach paid dividends, with his side showing resilience to secure all three points. Across the pitch, Regis Le Bris will be left to rue missed opportunities as Sunderland's promising start was undone in the final moments.
The atmosphere at Portman Road was electric throughout, particularly during the closing stages when Clarke's strike sent the home crowd into raptures. This victory gives Ipswich momentum heading into their next fixture.
