Lens 5-2 Auxerre: Thauvin's brace and red card spark dominant opening-day win
F. Thauvin scored twice from the spot as Lens overcame a late surge from Auxerre to secure a convincing Ligue 1 opener.

Lens kicked off their Ligue 1 campaign with a commanding 5-2 victory over Auxerre at Stade Bollaert-Delelis, with F. Thauvin's brace and a red card for the visitors setting the tone for a dominant display.
The home side struck early when F. Thauvin converted a 12th-minute penalty, establishing control before Auxerre could settle. Though Lens held just a one-goal lead at the break, the second half saw them pull away decisively.
F. Ivanovic extended the lead in the 49th minute, finishing off a precise assist from A. Sima. Five minutes later, S. Abdulhamid added a third, capitalizing on another delivery from F. Thauvin to leave Auxerre reeling.

Auxerre finally found a lifeline when D. Namaso converted a 61st-minute penalty, reducing the deficit and giving the visitors renewed belief. But Lens responded swiftly as I. Ganiou restored the three-goal cushion in the 66th minute, assisted by M. Skoras.
L. Sy kept Auxerre's hopes alive in the 69th minute with a well-taken goal, assisted by R. Mandengue, but Lens had one more blow in store. F. Thauvin stepped up to convert his second penalty in the 88th minute, sealing a comprehensive win.
The match was further tilted in Lens' favor when Auxerre's C. Makosso was shown a red card in the 35th minute, leaving the visitors to fight uphill for the remainder of the first half.
Despite late yellow cards for M. Nawrocki and L. Dioubate in stoppage time, Lens maintained their composure to secure all three points. The result leaves them in third place in the early Ligue 1 table under coach Dino Toppmoller, whose 3-4-2-1 formation proved effective against Auxerre's 4-3-3 setup.
Referee Mathieu Vernice allowed play to flow with minimal disruption, aside from the disciplinary issues that punctuated an entertaining opening half. Auxerre, meanwhile, will rue the red card and missed opportunities as they sit 14th after matchday one.
Looking ahead, Lens will take confidence from this strong start, while Auxerre must regroup quickly if they hope to climb the table under manager Christophe Pelissier.
