Sparta Rotterdam 3-3 Utrecht: Thrilling Eredivisie draw sees six goals and a last-gasp equaliser
Sparta Rotterdam were denied a dramatic victory in the dying moments as Utrecht snatched a 3-3 draw at Het Kasteel.

Sparta Rotterdam and Utrecht served up an entertaining Eredivisie encounter at Sparta Stadion Het Kasteel, with the hosts ultimately being denied victory in the dying moments of stoppage time.
The home side got off to a dream start inside the opening quarter of an hour. In the 16th minute, Sparta’s hopes of keeping a clean sheet were dashed when Utrecht’s M. Didden capitalised on a precise cross from Y. Cathline to fire past the goalkeeper and give the visitors the lead.
However, the hosts responded before the break. In the 45th minute, M. Young pulled one back for Sparta, finishing coolly after a well-worked move that saw B. Kuipers provide the assist. The teams headed into the tunnel level at 1-1.

The second half got off to a dramatic start. Just in the 46th minute, Utrecht restored their lead as A. Stepanov slotted home, with N. Vesterlund providing the delivery. The visitors looked in control, but Sparta were not to be left behind.
In the 67th minute, Sparta’s M. Zonneveld kept their hopes alive, converting from close range after a clever pass from S. Mito. The game was back level, and the atmosphere inside Het Kasteel grew electric.
Utrecht retook the lead in the 76th minute when A. Blake found the back of the net, though the goal came without an assist. The home crowd sensed a winner was needed, and their prayers seemed answered when N. Verschuren, teed up by J. Ideho, scored in the 90th minute plus six minutes of stoppage time.
But the drama wasn’t over yet. The referee, Dennis Higler, blew the final whistle moments later, confirming a 3-3 draw that left both sets of supporters thrilled and frustrated in equal measure.
Both managers stuck with a 3-4-3 formation, with Sparta’s Rogier Meijer and Utrecht’s Anthony Correia watching from the touchline. The result leaves Sparta in 12th place with three points from two matches, while Utrecht remain rooted to the bottom of the table without a point.
In the end, a match full of twists and turns finished honours even, with late drama ensuring the Eredivisie’s third round delivered another memorable spectacle.
