Fortuna Sittard secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Groningen with a late own goal sealing the win in a thrilling Eredivisie encounter at Euroborg.

In a match full of twists and turns at Euroborg, Fortuna Sittard emerged 3-2 winners against Groningen in their Eredivisie Regular Season clash. The game kicked off at 18:00 with both sides showing intent early on.
From the opening moments, Fortuna Sittard made their presence felt. Just four minutes in, R. Guth picked up a yellow card, setting the tone for a combative fixture. Undeterred, Fortuna Sittard struck first in the 12th minute through M. Ihattaren, who found the net with a precise finish assisted by L. Zeefuik.
Groningen responded swiftly. In the 19th minute, D. van der Werff pulled one back for the home side, capitalizing on a well-weighted pass from J. Schreuders. The goal reignited the home crowd’s hopes.
Fortuna Sittard retook the lead before halftime. At the 28th minute mark, L. Zeefuik scored his second contribution of the evening, this time finishing himself after E. Michut provided the assist. The visitors went into the break with a commanding 2-1 advantage.

The second half began with Groningen pushing forward in search of an equalizer. Their efforts paid off in the 65th minute when J. Ondrejka was shown a yellow card during a tense moment. Not long after, in the 69th minute, J. Hubner received a booking for Fortuna Sittard, adding to the match’s growing intensity.
With just under twenty minutes remaining, Fortuna Sittard extended their lead. In the 72nd minute, A. Descotte netted the third goal for the visitors, once again benefiting from E. Michut’s creative playmaking. The assist marked Michut’s second of the evening.
Groningen refused to surrender. In the 87th minute, fortune favored them as J. Hubner of Fortuna Sittard inadvertently sent the ball into his own net, reducing the deficit to 3-2. The own goal sparked renewed energy in the home side.
As the clock ticked into stoppage time, tensions flared. E. Vaessen earned a yellow card for Groningen in the 88th minute, while E. Michut picked up a late booking for Fortuna Sittard in the first minute of added time. T. Hernes also received a caution for Groningen in the seventh minute of stoppage time, capping off a heated conclusion.
Despite the late surge from Groningen, Fortuna Sittard held firm to claim all three points. The win moves them up to eighth place in the Eredivisie table with four points from three games.
Groningen, meanwhile, remain fifth with six points after three matches. While the loss is disappointing, their resilient performance — especially the late own goal and sustained pressure — suggests they will be competitive throughout the season.
Referee Martijn Vos oversaw a physical but fair contest, allowing the flow of play to continue despite several contentious moments. Both coaches, Dick Lukkien of Groningen and Danny Buijs of Fortuna Sittard, saw their tactical setups tested, with formations of 4-2-3-1 and 5-3-2 respectively.
Looking ahead, Fortuna Sittard will take confidence from this away victory, while Groningen must regroup quickly to address the defensive lapses that cost them dearly. The Eredivisie season continues with plenty of stories still to unfold.
