Gençlerbirliği held on by late Traoré equaliser to draw 1-1 with Erzurumspor at Eryaman
Gençlerbirliği S.K. and Erzurumspor FK played out a 1-1 draw in the third round of the Süper Lig at Eryaman Stadyumu in Ankara.
Gençlerbirliği S.K. and Erzurumspor FK were locked in a tight contest at Eryaman Stadyumu in Ankara, with neither side able to break the deadlock in the opening 45 minutes. The equaliser shifted momentum firmly towards the hosts, but Erzurumspor remained dangerous on the break. O. Ulgun received a yellow card in the 68th minute as the game opened up, and both sides began to push for a winner.
As the clock approached full time, the atmosphere at Eryaman grew increasingly intense. Erzurumspor’s E. Owusu was booked in the 82nd minute, and with the scoreline suggesting a draw was likely, referee Umit Ozturk kept a close eye on proceedings in the final moments.
In stoppage time, tensions flared further. O. Diabate, whose assist had helped level the score, was shown a yellow card in the 90+4th minute. Moments later, N. Mujakic became the sixth player to be cautioned, receiving his booking in the 90+6th minute as the final whistle blew.
The result leaves Gençlerbirliği S.K. top of the Süper Lig table with six points from two matches, while Erzurumspor FK remain rooted to the bottom of the standings, still searching for their first point of the campaign.
For Erzurumspor, the point offers little comfort, but E. Tozlu’s strike showed they are capable of finding the net. Their defensive resilience, however, will need to improve if they are to climb away from the foot of the table.
Gençlerbirliği, meanwhile, will feel they edged the contest. The late intervention of A. Traoré ensured they did not leave Eryaman empty-handed, and the point keeps them in the early lead at the top of the division.
Looking ahead, Gençlerbirliği will aim to build on this performance and maintain their strong start under Metin Diyadin. The 4-3-3 formation appeared to suit them, particularly in the final third where Traoré’s finishing proved decisive.
Erzurumspor, on the other hand, must quickly regroup. The 5-4-1 system provided defensive stability, but without greater attacking threat, they may struggle to create meaningful chances against more organised opposition.
Both coaches will reflect on a match that ultimately delivered drama, discipline issues, and a fair result. The Eryaman Stadyumu hosted a compelling encounter that ended in a draw neither side could afford to lose.
