Heerenveen held to narrow home loss by PEC Zwolle double
Two second-half strikes from PEC Zwolle condemned Heerenveen to a 2-0 defeat at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.

PEC Zwolle secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory away at the Abe Lenstra Stadion, with both goals coming in the second half to hand Heerenveen a narrow defeat in their Eredivisie encounter.
The first half offered little goalmouth drama, with both sides creating occasional chances but failing to trouble the opposing goalkeepers. Referee Richard Martens kept a tight watch on proceedings, and the deadlock remained intact as the teams headed into the break level at 0-0.
The visitors broke the deadlock in the 50th minute when N. Viergever slotted home calmly, with D. Mbayo providing the assist. The goal lifted the spirits of the PEC Zwolle contingent in attendance and shifted momentum firmly in their direction.

Just over a decade later, in the 61st minute, K. Kostons doubled the lead with a well-taken strike, again set up by D. Mbayo. The assist marked a productive evening for the playmaker, whose incisive passing had repeatedly troubled Heerenveen's midfield.
Heerenveen, operating under Robin Veldman in a 4-2-3-1 formation, struggled to respond meaningfully after falling behind. Their efforts to mount a comeback were largely half-hearted, and PEC Zwolle’s defensive line, marshalled by Henry Van Der Vegt, held firm.
Tempers flared late in the contest. M. Linday received a yellow card for Heerenveen in the 79th minute, while earlier in the half, K. Kostons had been cautioned for a robust challenge. R. Thomas had also been booked for PEC Zwolle in the first half, ensuring the match ended with a healthy scattering of cards.
Despite dominating possession for long periods, Heerenveen could not find a way through PEC Zwolle’s compact shape. The home side’s frustration was evident as the clock wound down, but the visitors managed the result with composure.
The defeat leaves Heerenveen sixth in the Eredivisie table with four points from two games, while PEC Zwolle remain rooted to the bottom of the standings, still searching for their first points of the campaign.
Looking ahead, PEC Zwolle will take confidence from this clean-sheet triumph, whereas Heerenveen must regroup quickly to address the shortcomings exposed over ninety minutes at the Abe Lenstra Stadion.
Both teams now turn their attention to the forthcoming fixtures, with Heerenveen hoping to rediscover their attacking rhythm and PEC Zwolle eager to build on this encouraging away performance.
The result serves as a reminder of the fine margins that define the Eredivisie, where a single moment of quality can tilt the balance between defeat and victory.
